Sunrise at Cancha Cancha marks the beginning of a new day on the Lares Trek to Machu Picchu 4 Days 3 Nights. Porters will offer a hot drink to start the day, while travelers prepare their backpacks before breakfast. Afterward, you can visit the local primary school, where children still learn Quechua, the ancient Inca language. This brief cultural immersion allows you to appreciate the value of living traditions in the Andes.
Once ready, hikers begin the final descent of the trek, an approximately four-hour walk along a trail surrounded by spectacular landscapes, herds of llamas, and alpacas grazing freely. Upon arriving at Huaran, a private transfer from Andean Ecotravel will take the group to the Sacred Valley to visit the impressive Maras salt mines.
At this site, located more than 11,000 feet above sea level, a natural saltwater spring flows down the mountainside, forming more than 3,000 evaporation pools. These terraces, used since pre-Inca times, produce a mineral-rich salt with a characteristic pink hue. Each local family owns a pool and makes a living from its artisanal production. There is also a small shop on-site where you can purchase natural salt as a souvenir of your trip.
After the visit, the tour continues by vehicle to Ollantaytambo, a 45-minute drive through Andean landscapes. This town, considered the last living Inca settlement, retains its cobblestone streets, water channels, and original walls dating back centuries. During the tour, your guide will share the history and archaeological significance of this site before dinner at a local restaurant.
At the end of the day, you’ll board the 7:00 PM train to Aguas Calientes, the town located at the foot of Machu Picchu (schedules may vary based on availability). Once there, travelers will check into their hotel to rest and prepare for the anticipated visit to the Inca citadel the following day.
The Lares Trek 4 Days 3 Nights combines the adventure of trekking with unique cultural experiences, connecting the traditional life of the Andes with the majesty of the Sacred Valley and the magic of Machu Picchu.
