TRIP ITINERARY

Today, you will get an early start on your Salkantay trek 4 days adventure. We will pick you up from your accommodation in Cusco at 4:00 a.m. and drive for approximately two hours to Mollepata, where you’ll enjoy a short breakfast. Our comfortable transportation includes warm blankets, allowing you to rest a little longer before the trek begins.

After breakfast, we continue for another hour to Challacancha, the official starting point of the trek. Here, you’ll meet our muleteers and cooks and complete a final check of your luggage before setting off on a gentle three-hour hike to Soraypampa (3,900 m / 12,795 ft), where our first camp is located. Along the way, you’ll enjoy views of impressive glaciers, a deep Andean valley, and an ancient Inca water channel that is still used by local farmers today. This section of the trail covers 7 kilometers (4.35 miles).

Upon arrival in Soraypampa, you’ll settle into your comfortable igloo at our exclusive Salkantay Sky Camp and enjoy your first freshly prepared meal by our talented mountain chefs. After a short rest, we begin the afternoon hike to the stunning Humantay Lake (4,200 m / 13,780 ft), often called the jewel of the Andes. The round-trip hike takes approximately 2.5 hours and covers 3 kilometers (1.86 miles). Although the distance is short, the altitude can be challenging, so a slow and steady pace is recommended.

At the turquoise lagoon, you’ll have plenty of time to relax, take photos, and admire the contrast between the crystal-clear waters and the surrounding snow-capped peaks. After returning to camp, enjoy a delicious dinner while watching the sunset over the mountains. As night falls, retreat to your Sky Camp for a peaceful night’s sleep beneath a sky full of constellations, surrounded by the silence of the Andes.

Known as the “Path of the 7 Snakes” due to its winding ascent, this section demands effort but rewards hikers with extraordinary panoramic views. From the summit, you’ll admire the imposing Salkantay Mountain (6,271 m / 20,574 ft), the second-highest peak in the Cusco region and revered as an Apu (Inca God). You’ll also enjoy views of Humantay, Tucarhuay, and Pumasillo mountains stretching across the Andean horizon.

After resting and taking photos at the pass, you’ll begin a steep descent of 7 kilometers (4.35 miles) toward Huayracmachay (3,850 m / 12,631 ft), where lunch awaits. Although this section is demanding, it offers stunning views of the surrounding valleys and dramatic mountain scenery.

Following a revitalizing lunch, the landscape begins to change as you enter the edge of the rainforest, known as the cloud forest. This 9.5-kilometer (5.9-mile) hike takes approximately three hours and showcases a striking transition from the Andes to the Amazon basin. Along the way, you’ll encounter lush vegetation, native plants, diverse wildlife, and a noticeably warmer climate.

As the environment becomes increasingly tropical, you’ll enjoy views of waterfalls, vibrant birdlife, fruit trees, and diverse flora and fauna that thrive in this warm and fertile region.

Hotel 2* in Aguas Calientes Town

This is the day you’ve been waiting for since the very first step of your Salkantay trek 4 days. After a restful night in Aguas Calientes, we’ll wake up before dawn to begin our visit to Machu Picchu, one of the New Seven Wonders of the World and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Starting early allows us to avoid the crowds and enjoy the magical morning light illuminating the towering cliffs that surround the Inca citadel.

From Aguas Calientes, you’ll take a short bus ride up to the entrance of Machu Picchu, which opens at 6:00 a.m. Once inside, your expert guide will lead a comprehensive two-hour guided tour through the most important sectors of the site, including temples, residences, agricultural terraces, and ceremonial areas. You’ll be amazed by the architectural mastery of the Incas and their ability to build a sustainable city on a steep mountainside using stone, water canals, and advanced engineering techniques.

Despite lacking modern tools such as iron or steel, the Incas created an urban masterpiece that continues to astonish visitors and researchers alike. When Hiram Bingham was guided to Machu Picchu by local Peruvians, the site was almost completely hidden by dense vegetation. Today, it has been carefully restored and preserved as one of the most treasured archaeological sites in the world.

After the guided tour, you’ll have free time to explore on your own or, if booked in advance, hike one of the optional mountains: Huayna Picchu (2,720 m / 8,924 ft) or Machu Picchu Mountain (3,000 m / 9,843 ft). Both climbs offer spectacular panoramic views of the citadel and surrounding mountains.

Later, you’ll return to Aguas Calientes for lunch before boarding the train to Ollantaytambo (schedule subject to availability). Upon arrival, our private transportation will be waiting to transfer you back to your hotel in Cusco, marking the end of an unforgettable journey through the Andes—one that will stay with you long after the trek is over.
